Car hire at Girona Airport

Aena lists four car hire companies at Girona-Costa Brava. Most of the Costa Brava is within an hour's drive, so the details that change your final cost are the deposit, the excess and the fuel policy, not the distance.

Check the full terms before booking

A cheap headline price can come with a large card hold or an off-airport shuttle.

  • Collection point: a desk in the terminal, a shuttle stop or a meeting point.
  • Deposit: the amount held, the card types accepted and whose name must be on the card.
  • Excess: what you could owe after damage or theft, and what the cover leaves out.
  • Fuel: the level at collection, the level required on return and the refuelling charge.
  • Opening hours: late arrivals and early departures need a desk that is open at that time.
  • Cross-border use: France is close, and many rental agreements restrict cross-border travel or charge a fee for it.

Your voucher tells you where to go. Follow the instructions for the desk, shuttle or meeting point. Not every supplier hands over cars in the same place.

Car hire companies listed by Aena

Aena's Girona-Costa Brava car hire page names these four companies. Checked in October 2026.

Company listed by AenaWhat to confirm on your voucher
HertzThe desk instructions and the return procedure for your booked times.
GobycarWhere the car is handed over and the payment card the offer requires.
Goldcar-InterRentThe deposit, the excess and the fuel policy attached to your rate.
ThriftyThe collection point, opening hours and what happens if your flight is late.

Use the company named on your booking voucher. A comparison search can also return suppliers based outside the terminal who collect you by shuttle. Aena's list does not replace the instructions that come with your booking.

From arrivals to the car

Save the voucher offline before you fly, so you are not relying on mobile data when you land.

  1. Read the collection instructions. Find the supplier name, desk, shuttle stop or meeting point before you leave arrivals.
  2. Have the main driver's documents ready. Driving licence, passport, booking voucher and the payment card required under the rental conditions.
  3. Check the paperwork at the desk. Confirm the deposit, excess, fuel level, mileage terms, any extras and the return location before signing.
  4. Match the car to the condition report. Ask for any missing scratches, dents, wheel marks or chips in the glass to be added.
  5. Take photos. Record every side, the wheels, the windscreen, the interior, the mileage and the fuel gauge before you move off.

Deposit and excess are not the same thing

The deposit is an amount held on your card while you have the car. The excess is the most you may have to pay towards damage or theft under the agreement.

There is no standard Girona Airport deposit. It depends on the supplier, the car, the card and the cover you choose. Read the conditions of the exact offer before paying.

Questions to answer before you pay

  • What deposit applies to this car?
  • Is a credit card required, or is a debit card accepted?
  • Must the card be in the main driver's name?
  • What are the damage and theft excesses?
  • Are glass, tyres, keys or the underside excluded?
  • Is driving into France allowed, and at what cost?

Driving from Girona Airport

The airport sits just south of Girona, beside the AP-7 motorway. Road distances below are rounded.

DestinationApproximate road distance
Girona city13 km
Lloret de Mar35 km
Blanes35 km
Platja d'Aro40 km
Tossa de Mar45 km
Figueres60 km
Roses75 km
Barcelona city centre95 km

Coast roads

The roads into Tossa and along the coast north of Lloret are narrow with tight bends. A smaller car is easier to drive and to park in the old towns.

France

The border is less than an hour's drive north. Check whether the agreement allows cross-border travel, whether a fee applies and whether breakdown cover still works there.

Barcelona

Barcelona has a low-emission zone. If you plan to drive into the city, ask the supplier which DGT environmental label the car carries.

Questions about Girona Airport car hire

Which car hire companies are at Girona Airport?

Aena's Girona-Costa Brava car hire page lists four companies: Hertz, Gobycar, Goldcar-InterRent and Thrifty (checked October 2026). A comparison site can also show suppliers that collect you by shuttle, so follow the instructions on your voucher.

How far is Girona Airport from the Costa Brava resorts?

By road, Girona city is about 13 km away, Lloret de Mar and Platja d'Aro about 35 to 40 km, Tossa de Mar about 45 km, Figueres about 60 km and Roses about 75 km. Barcelona city centre is about 95 km.

Do I need a credit card to hire a car at Girona Airport?

Many offers ask for a credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit. Some accept a debit card with conditions. The requirements depend on the supplier and the specific rate, so read the rental conditions of the exact offer before you pay.

Is the deposit the same as the excess?

No. The deposit is the amount held on your card while you have the car. The excess is the most you may have to pay towards damage or theft under the agreement. Extra cover at the desk can lower the excess and sometimes the deposit.

Can I drive a Girona hire car into France?

Only if the rental agreement allows it. The French border is close, so many travellers ask. Check the cross-border rule and any fee before booking, and tell the desk where you plan to drive.

What should I check before returning the car?

Check the return location and hours on your voucher, refuel if the policy is full to full and keep the receipt, then photograph the car, mileage and fuel gauge in the return area.
