Getting there and mountain driving
La Palma is steep and volcanic. Driving out of the airport towards Santa Cruz takes about 12 minutes (8 km) via the LP-5 and LP-1. If you head across the island towards the Caldera de Taburiente or the Roque de los Muchachos, expect winding mountain roads with sharp bends and tunnels. Check your hire car's brakes and tyres before setting off, keep your lights on in tunnels, and never rush hairpin bends.
On arrival
