Madeira mountain road safety

A calm approach to the ER101, ER102, VE2 and VE4. Prepare for steep drops, tunnels, quick weather changes and places where levada paths meet the road.

The simple rule

Drive for the road you can see. Slow down before a bend or tunnel, leave room ahead and stop somewhere safe if visibility becomes poor.

What makes these roads demanding

The ER101, ER102, VE2 and VE4 can place several kinds of hazard in the same drive. Expect sections with steep drops and bends that hide what is ahead. Tunnels create a sudden change in light, while weather can change between exposed and sheltered parts of the route.

Levada paths can cross or meet roads. Watch for people near these crossings and do not assume the road will remain clear beyond the next bend.

  • Reduce speed before the bend, not while you are already turning.
  • Leave enough space to stop within the road you can see.
  • Enter tunnels with your lights on and remove sunglasses before the light changes.
  • Look for walkers where levada paths meet the road.

How to drive with less pressure

Use a low gear before a steep descent so the car helps control its speed. Avoid riding the brakes. On a climb, choose a gear that lets the car pull smoothly without a rushed change on a bend.

Keep to your side of the road and resist following a confident local driver at their pace. If traffic builds behind you, continue until you find a safe place where you can pull over fully. Do not stop in a tunnel, on a bend or beside an exposed drop unless an emergency leaves no safer choice.

If rain, cloud or glare cuts visibility, slow down early and increase the gap ahead. If you no longer feel able to see and control the road safely, use a proper stopping place and wait for conditions to improve.

Fuel and charging before a mountain drive

Do not rely on finding fuel or a working charger at the next turn. Route-specific gaps and current charging availability can change, so check the car's range and the places you intend to use before departure. Confirm charging access and connector details with the operator shown by your chosen charging service.

Start a longer mountain drive with enough range for the planned route and an alternative. If the hire car is electric, allow for climbs, weather and diversions when deciding whether the displayed range is comfortable.

If you need help

Move away from traffic only when it is safe. Use the hazard lights, note the road name or nearest tunnel marker, and follow any instructions displayed inside a tunnel.

  • For an emergency, call 112.
  • For ACA assistance, call 800 202 202.
  • For a breakdown or vehicle warning, also follow the assistance instructions in the rental agreement.
