Car hire at Murcia Airport

Murcia's airport is at Corvera, about 25 km south of the city, and it is the gateway to the Costa Cálida, the Mar Menor and La Manga. Public transport from the terminal is limited, so most visitors pick up a car. Before you pay, check where you collect it, how much is held on your card, the excess and the fuel policy.

Check the full terms before booking

A cheap headline price can come with a large card hold or an off-airport shuttle.

  • Airport code: book for RMU (Corvera). San Javier (MJV) stopped taking civil flights in January 2019.
  • Collection point: a desk in the terminal, a shuttle stop or a meeting point.
  • Deposit: the amount held, the card types accepted and whose name must be on the card.
  • Excess: what you could owe after damage or theft, and what the cover leaves out.
  • Fuel: the level at collection, the level required on return and the refuelling charge.
  • Opening hours: a late flight needs a desk that is still open, or clear out-of-hours instructions.

Car hire companies listed by Aena

Aena's car hire page for Región de Murcia International Airport names these three companies. Checked in October 2026.

Company listed by AenaWhat to confirm on your voucher
ThriftyWhere the desk or meeting point is, and the return procedure for your booked times.
Goldcar-InterRentThe deposit, the accepted cards, the cardholder rule and the fuel policy attached to your rate.
OK MobilityThe excess, what the cover leaves out (glass, tyres, underside) and what happens if your flight is late.

Use the company named on your booking voucher. A comparison search can also return suppliers based outside the terminal. Aena's list does not replace the instructions that come with your booking.

From arrivals to the car

Save the voucher offline before you fly, so you are not relying on mobile data when you land.

  1. Read the collection instructions. Find the supplier name, desk, shuttle stop or meeting point before you leave arrivals.
  2. Have the main driver's documents ready. Driving licence, passport, booking voucher and the payment card required under the rental conditions. Some suppliers ask UK drivers for a DVLA licence check code, so read your voucher before you travel.
  3. Check the paperwork at the desk. Confirm the deposit, excess, fuel level, mileage terms, any extras and the return location before signing.
  4. Match the car to the condition report. Ask for any missing scratches, dents, wheel marks or chips in the glass to be added.
  5. Take photos. Record every side, the wheels, the windscreen, the interior, the mileage and the fuel gauge before you move off.

Deposit and excess are not the same thing

The deposit is an amount held on your card while you have the car. The excess is the most you may have to pay towards damage or theft under the agreement.

There is no standard Murcia Airport deposit. It depends on the supplier, the car, the card and the cover you choose. Cover bought from a third party usually works by refund: the rental company charges you and you claim the money back, so the deposit is still held.

Read the full guide to deposits, excess and fuel policies, or check the fuel policy guide before you choose a rate.

Questions to answer before you pay

  • What deposit applies to this car?
  • Is a credit card required, or is a debit card accepted?
  • Must the card be in the main driver's name?
  • What are the damage and theft excesses?
  • Are glass, tyres, keys or the underside excluded?
  • Is a one-way return to Alicante allowed, and at what cost?

Mar Menor and La Manga

La Manga is a long strip with one main road along it, so the last kilometres can be slow on summer weekends. Use the full address of your apartment, not just "La Manga", or the sat nav may stop at the wrong end.

Summer heat

Murcia is one of the hottest parts of Spain in July and August. Check that the air conditioning works before you leave the car park, and keep water in the car on longer drives inland.

Longer stays

Many visitors stay several weeks on the Costa Cálida. On a long rental, the mileage allowance, the deposit hold and the cover for each day matter more than the daily rate.

Returning the car

  • Follow the return location and hours on your voucher.
  • Coming back from La Manga on a summer weekend, leave extra time for the traffic on the strip.
  • If the policy is full to full, refuel near the airport and keep the receipt.
  • Photograph the bodywork, wheels, mileage and fuel gauge in the return area.
  • Keep the agreement, condition report, photos and receipts until the deposit hold has gone.

Questions about Murcia Airport car hire

Which car hire companies are at Murcia Airport?

Aena's car hire page for Región de Murcia International Airport lists three companies: Thrifty, Goldcar-InterRent and OK Mobility (checked October 2026). A comparison site can also show suppliers that collect you by shuttle or meet you outside, so follow the instructions on your voucher.

Is Murcia Airport the same as San Javier?

No. Civil flights moved from San Javier (MJV) to the new Región de Murcia International Airport (RMU) at Corvera in January 2019. If an old booking or a friend's directions say San Javier, check that your rental is set for RMU.

How far is Murcia Airport from Murcia, Cartagena and the Mar Menor?

By road, Murcia city centre is about 25 km away, Cartagena about 32 km, San Javier about 29 km and Los Alcázares about 34 km. Mazarrón is about 42 km, the start of La Manga about 52 km and Torrevieja about 59 km.

Is Alicante Airport a better choice for Torrevieja or Orihuela Costa?

It can be, because Alicante has more flights and more rental companies. Murcia Airport is about 59 km from Torrevieja by road, so compare the flight time, the drive and the total rental price for both airports before you book.

Is the deposit the same as the excess?

No. The deposit is the amount held on your card while you have the car. The excess is the most you may have to pay towards damage or theft under the agreement. Extra cover at the desk can lower the excess and sometimes the deposit.

What should I check before returning the car?

Check the return location and hours on your voucher, refuel if the policy is full to full and keep the receipt, then photograph the car, mileage and fuel gauge in the return area.
